The Northwest Passage by Solarboat

Why adventure?

Excerpt from "Catching the Clouds"

(Editions Locus Solus - 2019)

When we find ourselves alone in the heart of the sea adorned with its dark mantle, when its mournful howls freeze our hearts and when its seethings make us shudder, then doubt sets in. Fatigue invites itself which scrambles our spirit weakens our ambitions. In these moments, staying the course becomes mission impossible. The fear is horribly there, a muted and threatening presence, impossible to ignore. Until the moment when we let go, when we accept what is. To be nothing but to be alive, an essential condition to continue on the road. The inventory that follows is intense but the moments of uncertainty remain brief. You have to react quickly to the savagery of the ocean, the strength of the winds or the alarming presence of ice. Nature has nothing to do with our disjointed thoughts. First warning.

These storms are just winding bends that have to be skilfully negotiated, never dead ends in which to get lost. They bring to light our powerlessness in the face of the elements and show us what we are when the situation escapes us: helpless. Like our lives, unpredictable, they take us by surprise and call us to order, awakening the survival instinct that was lounging somewhere in us. When suddenly, the imposed codes are totally unknown to us, determination becomes our only strength.

Then calm returns, the simplicity of life takes back its rights, our negative thoughts immediately dissolve into the air... Here is the magic of adventure  !
